Last week, I finally got round to decorating one of the notebooks I bought my sister for Christmas.

I was reminded of the fact that I’m actually quite impatient when it comes to art related things which is why I don’t do lettering more often. All Arts, as I know from being a musician, require perseverance. There will be those anomalies who have a natural talent for something and don’t need as much practice to be amazing, but for everyone else, you have to make a conscious decision to persevere and practice often. I didn’t wake up being able to play the guitar; it’s taken years of practice. Barre chords are hard – but the more I practice them, the easier they become to play.

So back to lettering. My first go at lettering was last year when I bought plain notebooks for my modules at university and decorated them.  I rushed them; I didn’t want to write in pencil then go over what I’d done in pen, so I wrote freehand using a marker. I made mistakes; one being that I had gotten the name of one of my modules completely wrong (but it wasn’t the end of the world because the notebook was just for my own notes anyway). The writing wasn’t as neat as it could be because I wanted beautifully personalised notebooks but I wasn’t willing to put in the level of care and patience that the task required.

This time around, I started with pencil and went over with pens. It was still quite difficult for me, but I resisted the urge to rush everything and took my time. Although it still didn’t turn out exactly as I wanted, it was so much better. It’s worth mentioning that I haven’t done any lettering since last year and so I accepted that it could only be so good because I hadn’t been practicing.

Skills require practice and I know that if I want to be better, I must practice and persevere, especially at those points when I want to give up. It’s so much easier said than done, but it’s essential if I want to improve. Before long, I’ll be able to confidently write freehand. Do you have a skill or sport or hobby you want to be better at? What I have for breakfast / Summer 2017

I’ve always had a bad habit of skipping breakfast. While being at university, I would rarely eat breakfast before lectures and that was down to a combination of reasons. The main reason is that I’m a nocturnal individual and I’d sleep very late (occasionally working on assignments, generally not) and end up not having enough time in the morning to make something to eat, and more importantly, I rarely feel hungry until about 2 hours after waking up so it was easier to eat after my morning lectures and it would end up being around 11 or 12.

I have come to accept that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and have decided to put more effort into ways I can get around skipping breakfast. Time is not an issue at the moment as I’ve just finished my degree and so I have plenty of time to have something to eat in the morning.

However, I still don’t feel very hungry when I wake up so I’ve started making breakfast smoothies which I love as I can have something healthy first thing in the morning, even if I don’t necessarily feel hungry, and have enough energy to start my day. I usually eat oats for breakfast when the weather is cooler, but in the summer, I add the sachets to my smoothies instead.

 

Here are the ingredients for the smoothie I made earlier this week:

  • 1 sachet of mixed berries oats (you can choose any)
  • 1 handful of mixed berries
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • Milk

It is totally up to you how much fruit you add. This applies to the milk too; it depends on how thick you want the smoothie to be or not. Milk can also be replaced with fruit juice.

I’m basic (but brilliant) and my fruit of choice will always be a banana – they’re just so good! I use bananas in almost all my smoothies. The smoothie ended up colour coordinating with my daily devotion book which was cool.
